  • Altitude Sickness

    Altitude sickness occurs when an individual fails to adapt adequately to areas high above sea level and as a result run low of oxygen.  This in turn affects the normal functioning of the body and can be dangerous even fatal if not treated.

  • Cholera

    GENERAL INFORMATION:

    It is recommended for individuals such as certain healthcare workers and people in close contact with someone who has a weakened immune system, who are likely to come into contact with people in “at-risk” groups. This is to reduce the risk of spreading the infection to those at risk.  The infection is most common in children below the age of ten, in whom it usually causes mild disease. The disease can be more serious in adults, particularly pregnant women and those who smoke.


    VACCINE DOSAGE:

    Two doses at 0 and 6 weeks, given to children from 1 year of age and adults. Vaccine fully effective 6 weeks after the 2nd dose.

  • Hepatitis A & B

    GENERAL INFORMATION:

    This preparation is designed for the convenience of travellers who require protection against both hepatitis A and B. The indications are the same as for the individual vaccines. Additional vaccine information: Individual hepatitis A vaccine has a higher dose of hepatitis A material, and so should be used where rapid protection is required, for example during an outbreak.


    VACCINE DOSAGE:

    Three doses at 0, 1 and 6 months.

  • Malaria

    GENERAL INFORMATION

    Malaria can have life-changing impact on your health or even fatal if treatment is not started promptly. There are a variety of treatments and products that can help to protect you. Your pharmacist can advise on the most appropriate choice of medication.


    SYMPTOMS

     muscle pains, headache and vomiting., fatigue, abdominal pain, Fever,


    MALARIA PREVENTION


    Doxycycline, 100mg

    Start 1–2 days before entering endemic area and continue for 4 weeks after leaving (see notes above), adult and child over 12 years, 100 mg once daily.


    Atovaquone/proguanil Start 1–2 days before entering endemic area and continue for 1 week after leaving, adult and child over 40 kg, 1 tablet daily


    Paediatric Malarone Start 1–2 days before entering endemic area and continue for 1 week after leaving, child body-weight 11–21 kg, 1 tablet once daily; body-weight 21–31 kg, 2 tablets once daily; body-weight 31–40 kg, 3 tablets once daily; body-weight over 40 kg use Malarone® (‘standard’) tablets


    Proguanil (100mg) Prefereably start 1 week before entering endemic area and continue for 4 weeks after leaving (see notes above), 200 mg once daily; infant up to 12 weeks body-weight under 6 kg, 25 mg once daily; 12 weeks–1 year body-weight 6–10 kg, 50 mg once daily; child 1–4 years body-weight 10–16 kg, 75 mg once daily; 4–8 years body-weight 16–25 kg, 100 mg once daily; 8–13 years, body-weight 25–45 kg, 150 mg once daily; over 13 years body-weight over 45 kg, adult dose


    Lariam/Mefloquine Start 2½ weeks before entering endemic area and continue for 4 weeks after leaving (see notes above), adult and child body-weight over 45 kg, 250 mg once weekly; body-weight 6–16 kg, 62.5 mg once weekly; body-weight 16–25 kg, 125 mg once weekly; body-weight 25–45 kg, 187.5 mg once weekly


    Preventing infection


    • Take medication to hrlp protect you (NOT 100% effective so take additional precautions)
    • Use  DEET insect repellents containing
    • Long sleeve tops, hats and sleeping nets to avoid mosquito bites
    • Have bedrooms sprayed where possible
    • Diagnose breakthrough malaria swiftly and obtain treatment promptly.

  • Japanese Encephalitis

    GENERAL INFORMATION:

    Inactivated strains of Japanese Encephalitis virus. Japanese Encephalitis is a viral infection causing a severe flu like illness. It is spread by mosquitoes that bite between dusk and dawn, and occurs mainly in rice and paddy field areas, often where pig farming takes place. Vaccination is recommended for rural or long-stay travellers in affected areas.



    VACCINE DOSAGE:

    Two doses at 0 and 28 days. Vaccine effective 7 days after 2nd dose.

    6 weeks before travel

    Jet lag occurs when travellers cross one or more time zones. Symtoms include feeling tired, groggy, confused, and lethargic.  It often subsides of its own accord after 2 – 4 days.


    Simple lifestyle changes and / or prescription medication can help minimise the negative impacts of jet lag.

     

    Melatonin a naturally occurring hormone helps control sleep and can be used in tablet form to treat jet lag.

    GENERAL INFORMATION:

    For travellers, there are available two quadrivalent vaccines – (protecting aginst four strains, A, C, W and Y): “polysaccharide” and “conjugate”. UK authorities recommend the use of the conjugate vaccine, and we can advise you about the choice.

  • Rabies

    GENERAL INFORMATION:

    Inactivated rabies virus particles. Rabies is a viral infection usually spread by the saliva of infected animals. Human cases are usually due to dog bites but many animals can be infected, and a scratch or lick may be sufficient to transmite the disease. Rabies is fatal once symptoms begin.



    VACCINE DOSAGE:

    Three doses at 0, 7 and 28 days.

    Travellers Diarrhoea

    Travellers' diarrhoea  can develop when travellers consume contaminated food and water contaminated with bacteria such as


    Symptoms of travellers' diarrhoea include  frequent bouts of diarrhoea that is accompanied by vomiting, a high fever and cramps. Dehydration may also develop - for this reason we recommend taking rehydration sachets when you travel


    If you feel your trip abroad is likely to put you at risjk of this condition, speak to our pharmacist who may be able to prescribe certain antibiotics effective in treating this potentially dangerous condition.
